The world press has recently been paying much attention to the ‘questionable’ gender of the record-breaking South African athlete Caster Semenya, and even the politicians are stepping in to the fray. Leaked reports claim that she has been diagnosed as being a hermaphrodite or ‘intersex,’ a condition that the ANC Youth League has stated, ‘in South Africa and the entire world of sanity, such does not exist.’ Emily Craven is Coordinator of the joint working group for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) groups in South Africa, and she talks about the condition and how they view the unfair treatment of Caster. Fadzai Muparutsa, who is the Programme Manager for Gender with Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ), also shares her views.
